A special assembly was organised in the school on 21 February to commemorate International Mother Language Day. A panel discussion was organised with teachers and students for a better understanding of the UNESCO philosophy, that education based on the first language or mother tongue must begin from the early years, and for facilitating a better understanding of this year’s theme, Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society. The three-language formula proposed under the New Education Policy became the starting point for the discussion. The panelists deliberated on issues related to linguistic diversity, promoting mother language, its short term, and long term implications, etc. The staff and students expressed their views supported by facts, statistics, and emotional appeal. The discussion concluded with unanimous agreement that the mother language needs its due promotion for its wide-reaching impact. The assembly winded up with the rendition of the song ‘We shall overcome’ in five languages.
